Happy Thursday Peace Group Learners and Families

This is my first official blog after returning to Eric Harvie School full-time.   My apologies for missing the blog yesterday. Transitions can be a challenge.

Today was a packed day full of learning for all of the Peace Group.

All of the students continue to work on developing their writing. We are all working on "Walking Stories" these are stories that are about themselves. We have focused on our memories.  A "Walking Story's" main character is the student. It is all about a person, place or thing that your child knows a lot about.  We have been using a variety of planning techniques. The students are also learning how to revise their writing by adding "Triple Scoop" words, interesting details and looking at using our "No Excuse" word lists for editing.

Math has been exciting and engaging for the students.  Mr. Kai and Mrs. Bowles' group continue their work on graphing.  Today we looked at how we can use tallies to make bar graphs.

Mrs. Campbell's group has also continued their work on pictographs.

In inquiry, our focus has been on the scientific aspects of our coastal communities. We are looking at boats and buoyancy. Our first investigation was on the concepts of sinking and floating.
If you would like to learn more about sinking and floating you can watch the following video:

On another note, we have had a number of students bring toys, jewellery, markers, pens, etc. that have been distracting to their learning. Can you please have a discussion with your children about keeping these objects at home.  Our Covid protocols also are that materials such as these cannot be in the classroom.  We have all the school supplies that the children need here at the school.  It also can create an unfortunate situation where their prized possessions get lost or stolen.  Thank you for helping us out with this matter.

Upcoming Reminders:

- next week is Teachers' Convention - there will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday, February 10th and Friday February 11th.

- Monday, February 14th is Family Day - NO SCHOOL - we will see you all back at school on Tuesday, February 15th.
