Thursday, April 29 - Coulee Walk Day

Image
Spring has arrived at the coulee!  What a beautiful day for investigations. Mrs. Campbell's Group continued their work on the flora and fauna of the coulee. They did a wetlands scavenger hunt. Mr. Kai's group were reflecting on how we felt in the coulee so that we can connect these to our persuasive writing about adding more green spaces to the city. The Bowles Bunch continued their research into the coulee 1000 years ago. They used their senses and attempted to use these to think about what the coulee would have been like.  We will use what we were doing to write a personal narrative. Today was Ms. Lambert's last day. We are truly going to miss her! A BIG Thank you to Mr. Strand for delivering our Fun Snack to the Coulee!

Reminders We are going for a coulee walk tomorrow morning. We are planning to leave around 845 am and will be back in time before lunch.                               Hats On! for Mental Health Day On the first Wednesday in May, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Participating schools will relax their hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school. Highlights from our Day The Peace Pod classes are busy working on their writing in their classes based on their work in coulee school. We are planning on having all of the students cycle through each of the the coulee school experiences as biologists, historians and environmentalists from now until the end of the year. As such, students will be creating persuasive writing, writing from a historical perspective and researching animals that live in the coulee We are continuing to learn mental math skills for subtraction. Reminders: No school Monday!  Our Day:  We're moving along with our Coulee School! We began and ended our day with Coulee School lessons.  In Mr. Kai's group, we read "Brother Eagle, Sister Sky" and continued work on our persuasive writing pieces. Ask your child what they're trying to persuade their readers to do!  In Mrs. Bowles' group, we continued work on our "present day" coulee art pieces. They're really turning out nicely! Ask your child what they're using to make their art?    Note: If students who are working with Mrs. Bowles for Coulee School want to bring in any more artifacts for their art, they should have them ready for Tuesday.  In Mrs. Campbell's group, we learned all about garter snakes! Ask your child what they learned!  Have a wonderful extra-long weekend!

Well another blast of winter has hit our community.  The wind today was cold and some of the students weren't quite prepared for the weather. Please make sure that your child has the items needed in case we have these weather changes that we have seen over the past week. Today was Earth Day!  This was a great time to discuss how we can treat our community and in turn the Earth for when we grow up!  We have connected some of learning today to the coulee.  Mr. Kai continued to work on their persuasive writing about taking care for the coulee and why green spaces are important for the city.  Mrs. Bowles/Ms. Lambert's group continued their work on their personal narratives about the coulee.  The writing that the students are doing is full of sensory imagery.  We will share their finished writing with the artwork that they will be creating tomorrow. Mrs. Campbell's group talked about the Great Horn Owl. They connected it with the book The Lorax  and how we need to take care of

Reminders: We will not be going to the coulee tomorrow, as we originally planned, as we went Wednesday instead.  Highlights from our Day: We had an amazing day at the coulee today. The weather was perfect! The biologists in Mrs. Campbell's class looked for evidence of spring and documented their findings in their visual journals. They will transfer this information into their nature journals going forward.  The historians in Mrs. Bowles' class went back to their sit spots to look for change. They connected to their work on the bison by sketching the bison statue and listening to the story of how Turtle Island was created. They also sketched the tipi circle. The environmentalists in Mr. Kai's class searched for signs of human interference in the coulee such as litter, broken branches, and footpaths off the trail. They gathered this information as evidence to use in their persuasive writing. They also listened to the sound of silence in their sit spots.
