Our Day: Our day began by working on our writing. Some of us have already finished the final draft of our writing and it looks great!  After snack, we went for a stroll around the community. We were looking to identify important locations in our community! It was great to get outside. To end the day, we had read-aloud and our Gratitude Circle.  Have great weekend!

Reminders: we are seeing lots of little toys coming from home - please keep toys at home or in backpacks if they are being sent for after school care extra masks are always useful if possible return library books - book exchange is tomorrow WE ARE GOING ON A COMMUNITY WALK TOMORROW. PLEASE BRING WARM CLOTHING (weather permitting) Highlights from our day: We continued to work our number building skills, being challenged to  numbers using different combinations of only 8 base 10 blocks. What numbers do you see here?    Science- our challenge in science was to build a boat that could carry a load. We had to be able to construct a boat that could float using only plasticine and then see how much mass it could carry. Students showed incredible perseverance and innovation! Spreading Kindness- Mrs. Campbell's class designed t-shirts for pink shirt day with messages of peace and kindness.

Happy Pink Shirt Day! February 24, 2021

Peace Group Celebrates Pink Shirt Day Our Peace Group Friends came to school in lots of PINK today.  Thank you to all of our families for helping us recognize this great cause.  If you would like to know the origins of this important day, please watch the video below: Mrs. Campbell's class showing that they stand up to bullying! Our morning went by very quickly.  Each group doing their literacy and math.  In Mr. Kai's and Mrs. Bowles' groups they continue to work on their final drafts of their personal choice of Walking Stories.  We are working on the revising and polishing components of the writing process. In math we are all working on representing numbers to 20 (required for grade one) and to 100.  We are learning this concept through estimating, games and Math Talk activities.  You can play the game at home with smaller objects.   Long piece of spaghetti  can be used as a ten rod and macaroni pieces can be used as one units. Race to 100 Equipment Needed: one die  9 -

Reminders: Tomorrow is Pink Shirt Day! Please wear pink or red or and EHS t-shirt if you have one to support peace, kindness and friendship and to spread the message of lifting one another up. Highlights from our day: In Math we continued to learn about odd and even numbers and began to talk about the patterns in our place value system. Through our number talk we discovered that our place value system, in kid language, "gets bigger by a zero as you move right - 1, 10, 100 - in other words it increases by a factor of 10. This helps us understand the value of a numeral in a number. We also played two math games. Instructions will posted below for those interested in playing at home.  Mrs. Campbell's class talked about Big and Small problems and how to solve them independently and if you need an adult to help or not.  In social we began looking at populations in Alberta's rural and urban area, and finished up some work learning about the Acadians.  Mrs. Campbell's class

Reminders: Pink Shirt Day is on Wednesday! Don't forget to wear your pink shirts. Find out more about Pink Shirt Day here .  Our Day: Our day began by working on our writing. We're picking one of our favourite writing plans and developing it into a finished piece! We're getting really good at editing our work.  In the afternoon, we enjoyed a math exercise were we compared numbers by showing which was numbers are "bigger than' or 'smaller than'.  To end the day, we continued our investigation of boats and buoyancy by answering a challenge. We tried to construct a water ladder that suspended itself in the water by floating. We had to use our knowledge of density and buoyancy to do it!

"Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching"  - Lin Pernille Our Day: Our day began with one of our students looking at the day's schedule and exclaiming, "Wow, this looks like it's going to be a fun day!"  After a writing  exercise, we had a video conference with Calgary's division of the Earth Guardians . They explained what they do and why they do it. For the last week, Eric Harvie has been host to their newly revealed Wild Rose art piece that was created with found plastic bags. Many of us were excited to join the Guardians when we reach age ten and some of us even suggested creating their own group for younger kids!  Yesterday, we learned about the deportation of the Acadians in 1755. It was something that really grabbed our attention! Today, we were excited to learn some more about the Acadians. To finish the day, we drew tall ships like the ones that sailed off the eastern coast.  Have great weekend!

Good Morning - Oops I forgot last night

Good Morning Peace Group As you have noticed I forgot to post the blog last night. My apologies for being so absent-minded. Today was a jam-packed  day in the Peace Group! We are busy writing about friendship. Today we focused on revising and making our writing clear for our readers to read.  We are preparing to write a final draft of one of our writing pieces.   We are learning about larger numbers in math. Today we focused on the tens in numbers.  We learned that it is an important part of larger numbers.  We represented numbers in a variety of ways: using ten frames, tallies, number lines, and ten blocks. We learned more about the Acadians of the East Coast.  We read a story entitled Fiddle and Spoon. We looked at the cultural aspects of the Acadian Life.  Mr. Kai even showed us how to play the spoons. Tomorrow some of us will be having our first spelling "Show What You Know" we will be using the word patterns that we have been working on over the past couple of weeks.

Reminders Please return any library books you may have at home. Students can check out new books every Friday.  Fun lunch is this Thursday Pink Shirt day is on Wednesday, February 24th Highlights from our day: Literacy: In writing today Mrs. Campbell's class used the 5 finger story planner to plan out a story about a friend/sibling and a time when they had a problem and how they resolved it. Mr. Kai and Mrs. Bowles' classes continued to add details to their writing draft about a good friend. Math: all classes reviewed even and odd numbers and played a game with a partner building numbers to 20 on two ten frames. Students had to spin a number between 11-20, build it then tell their partner how many more than 10 the number was, and how many less than 20 it was. The 10 frames helped us to subitize and count on.  Science: Mr. Kai's class experimented with the concept of buoyancy today by making non-floating objects float. Mrs. Campbell's class also continued this experiment
