Peace Group Celebrates Pink Shirt Day

Our Peace Group Friends came to school in lots of PINK today.  Thank you to all of our families for helping us recognize this great cause.  If you would like to know the origins of this important day, please watch the video below:

Mrs. Campbell's class showing that they stand up to bullying!

Our morning went by very quickly.  Each group doing their literacy and math.

In Mr. Kai's and Mrs. Bowles' groups they continue to work on their final drafts of their personal choice of Walking Stories.  We are working on the revising and polishing components of the writing process.

In math we are all working on representing numbers to 20 (required for grade one) and to 100.  We are learning this concept through estimating, games and Math Talk activities.  You can play the game at home with smaller objects.   Long piece of spaghetti  can be used as a ten rod and macaroni pieces can be used as one units.

Race to 100
Equipment Needed:
one die
9 - ten rods (spaghetti, popsicle sticks, straws, etc.)
10 0 unit cubes (macaroni, beads, beans, sugar cubes)

First person rolls a number and builds it in the first ten frame.

Each person takes a turn rolling the die.

Each person will build on the number each roll - when they fill up their ten frame they will lay a ten rod across the frame and continue to add unit cubes.

First person to get to 100 without going over will win the game.

This is what a ten frame looks like

In Inquiry, we are looking at urban and rural communities.  Students are looking at urbanization.  We created graphs that for the years 1901, 1956 and 2011 and compared people in Alberta living in urban and rural communities.  We discussed what we noticed from these graphs.

On a final note, The Peace Group has been working hard on becoming peaceful under difficult circumstances.  We know that we are all very tired of the Covid protocols that we have so diligently been following.  We are adhering to our cohorts and we spend our entire day with our class.  We are also eating lunch, going to gym, movement breaks, music and so much more with the same friends each day.  This can be trying on our building peaceful relationship skills.  Please know that we are trying as a group to also bring friendship lessons into our day.  Even though we are trying our best, we are still encountering some arguments, pushing and shoving and other physical altercations.  We take these incidents very seriously and are in communication with our lunchroom and playground supervisors.  We will continue to communicate with you as parents to help all of us get through these difficult times. Thank you for your continued support in helping our young learners learn social skills during our cohorting year.

Here is another resource that parents can access for information on building positive relationships.

URStrong is a resource that we have used in the past.  This year, they are offering parents a FREE membership. You can access the information here:
