Welcome to Calgary Spring (Warm/ Sunshine/Cold/Snow)

Just a reminder that the weather is always changing.  Students will be going outside twice per day, lunch recess and during movement break in the afternoon.  Please ensure that you child has appropriate clothing for the ever-changing weather.  Some students were very cold today when we went from a beautiful morning to snow and windy conditions during our lunchroom recess and afternoon movement break.

We continue pack our days with lots of learning in many subject areas.

In literacy, we continue to work on learning our spelling patterns through Words Their Way - Mr. Kai and Mrs. Bowles groups have both had new word lists sent home for practice.

We continue to learn about how to read and write nonfiction.  Understanding (comprehension) is an important skill when reading.  We have practiced many new strategies to learn new information from text features.

In math, all students are learning strategies for addition.  One of the strategies we have focused on using is "doubles." We are able to practice our strategy learning through games.

In our inquiry science learning, students spent time designing and planning their boats.  This task brings together all the learning we have done in our Boats and Buoyancy lessons.  Tomorrow we will be building and testing our boats.

On Tuesday, some of the students did a SPARK/ Movement that helps us get ready for our learning in the afternoon.  During this time we do many different active movement workouts, one of these workouts was around Dinosaurs.  I promised the students that I would share it with all of you in the blog. You may want to try it out at home.

Some of the EHS students have been working hard creating plays.  As this work has progressed they have shown interest in carrying these plays forward to something that they can perform and perhaps film.  They have been working on set, props and costume design and are hopeful that they can create these themselves.  If you have any of the following to donate we would really appreciate it. There will be a cart outside the front of the school at pick up and drop off times for any donations, you may also send them with your student to give to me.

Here are some ideas:

Fabric

Wings

Wire coat hangers

Elastic

Headbands

Barrettes

Safety Pins

Thread

Costume Pieces

Here are the plays in case they help inspire somethings you may not have thought of:

  1. Stone Slop (Monster version of Stone Soup)
  2. Aladdin and the Magic Pickle Jar (Pixie, Aladdin, Goes from North Pole to Airport)
  3. June Bug and the Flea (Every sort of bug)
  4. The Prince Frog (Speaks for itself)
  5. Queen Midas (Queen and ladies in waiting, Magician, Photographer, Soccer players)
  6. Jack and the Giant Sunflower
